Compression is often a love hate relationship. Many guitarist’s find themselves asking the question, “How do you compress your signal without squashing all of your tone?” Well the JHS Pulp N’ Peel Compressor is the answer to all of your compression whoas. I use this compressor exclusively on my board because of 2 reasons:
Built in Buffer
The built in buffer is just your normal standard buffer but having it built into the pedal allows you to save space on your pedalboard and saves you a slot in your power supply.
Blend Knob
This little knob is what makes this compressor a must have for every guitarist’s board. It allows you to blend in a variable amount of un-compressed tone in with the compressed tone from the pedal. Part of the issue with compressor pedals is that they are hard to dial in and when you add multiple guitars to the mix then you have a real issue. This blend knob allows you to dial in your tone with guitar changes with the turn of only one knob.
I ran this pedal through a ton of different amps and here is how well the pedal pairs with each amp with 10 being the best.
- Fender Blues Junior: 10
- Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (Modded): 8
- Vox AC30CC2 w/ Alnico Blues: 7
- Vox AC30 Hand Wired w/ Greenbacks: 9
- Orange Dual Terror Head w/ 2×12 Cabinet: 6
- Matchless SC-30 – 10
- Tophat Club Royale – 6
- Morgan RCA35 – 9
- Dr. Z Maz 18 NR – 9
- Dr. Z Maz 38 NR – 10
Pros
- Usability: It is extremely easy to get compressed tones out of this pedal.
- Durability: As with any JHS Pedal this thing is built like a tank.
- Great Company: I cannot say enough great things about Josh at JHS. A stellar dude that runs a business with extreme integrity and attention to detail.
- Blend Knob: Dial in great tones with ease and let your original signal through to maintain your original tone.
- Built in Buffer: The built in buffer saves pedalboard and power supply space.
Cons
- Bright LED: Some have complained that the LED is just to bright. It has never bothered me but a piece of gaffers tape will fix the problem if it does bother you.
