The NOS Panther Ribbon microphone blends all the vintage ribbon mic tone your guitar amps deserve while retaining all the good things you can get from modern mics. Panther did it this way so that the mic would respond well with any preamp on the market. I recently bought a stereo match pair of these mics and I want to share with you the results.
To keep the spirit of vintage gear, I’ll be using a vintage Silvertone Twin Twelve (1961) as my amp as well as a TMG co. Dover known for it’s classic Stratocaster tone. Along with the pedals listed below. As a control, I’m pairing the Panther up with a Shure SM57 both placed on the edge of the cone.
- Walrus Mayflower Drive
- Eventide H9 & Space
- Strymon Timeline on dBucket delay

Summary
The Panther brings all the dark and fat tones ribbon mics are known for. Blended with the SM57 you get all you could ever need from your amp as well as bring excitement to any producer/mixing engineer. The going price on this mic is under $250, which makes it a great value for home recording. Don’t let the price fool you though. This microphone would make a great guitar tracking microphone in any professional studio.
Pros
- A great active ribbon mic that feels and sounds as good as the more expensive counterparts.
Cons
- Because its a ribbon microphone, its not road worthy and needs special care.
